The lowest cost water is the water that you don’t use

Water stress and the impact of climate change are some of today’s most pressing issues for individuals and organisations across the globe. Over the past years everybody has seen warmer and wetter winters, hotter and drier summers, and more frequent and intense weather extremes. According to WHO – by 2025, half of the global population will live in water-stressed areas. In 2021 UK Environment Agency chief Sir James Bevan outlined that the lack of water presents an ‘existential’ threat to UK households and businesses.

Summer rainfall is expected to decrease by approximately 15 per cent by the 2050s in England. (For source, see the article on gov.uk titled ‘Lack of water presents ‘existential’ threat.) Sustainable water management is more important than ever. In recent years many solutions have been implemented across all industries and in commercial laundries.

Future water scarcity will impact with water prices to increase even more rapidly. Managing water use to achieve the lowest consumption becomes a competitive long-term advantage for the industry. Here we see a fundamental principle: The lowest cost water is the water that you don’t use! Reducing and reusing water in the process is key. Minimised water consumption also leads to energy savings as water that is not used does not need to be heated. Best water and energy ratios for a commercial laundry are only achievable if the right equipment is properly integrated into an optimised wash process.

With its expertise and offerings, Ecolab is the right partner to help laundries adopt smarter water management practices. At Ecolab we approach water management in multiple steps. The first step is to work on wash process optimisation and reduced water consumption, by applying innovative washing solutions and advanced machine set up. We focus not only on chemistry that allows more efficient rinsability, but also on high level expertise to properly balance the overall water flow within the process.

The second step is the direct re-use of process water.

With high quality filtration of the reused water combined with an intelligent process-set up it is possible to save up to 50 per cent of water, achieved with moderate installation costs and short ROI. The filtered water still contains energy and some chemical properties that enhance the wash quality all whilst helping to save energy too. This helps to reduce the operational costs and with minimal maintenance. The ultimate step for total water management is water recycling. This is achieved via effluent treatment and recirculation. As this treatment step is more cost intensive, it is crucial to first work on reducing and reusing the volumes of process water, thereby ensuring that investment and running costs are significantly reduced. This multi-step approach by Ecolab allows us to develop customised solutions based on individual laundry needs.
