Finnish self-service launderette opens another Morrisons branch

24 Laundromat has opened its third UK branch in Morrisons Darlington. Majority owned by the Finnish parent company, 24 Pesula Oy, 24 Laundromat has already seen astonishing success in its Blackburn and Peckham locations. After a successful first month in Darlington, the team behind the launderette chain invited locals to celebrate their newest addition at their meet and greet event in February. Anne-Marie Curry, mayor of Darlington, attended the official opening event with the UK team that made it all possible. Alongside showcasing its cutting-edge technology, 24 Laundromat embraced its heritage by handing out Finnish chocolate that visitors loved.

24 Laundromat was established in 1999 by the seven Nevala brothers and their interest in technology. They saw the gap in the market between launderettes and high technology machinery. With a combination of their data research and technical skills, the Nevala brothers started to design completely new washing machines. So far, they have successfully opened over 50 launderettes in Finland and now three in the UK. Asko Nevala, chair of the board of 24 Pesula Ltd, said that the Finnish home market is becoming mature for their business growth, and they started to look for other markets.

Market research has shown that people in the UK are used to launderette services, and, as such, there was a gap for a self-service, modern technology-based launderette; this is what triggered the plans to start building a UK chain. Conveniently located within the Darlington Morrisons, 24 Laundromat’s new launderette provides unrivalled convenience for their customers, who can now enjoy a quick catchup at Morrisons cafe while waiting for their washing to complete its cycle or even get their weekly shop done. The Darlington branch includes multiple washers (including a specialised rug and pet bed washer), tumble dryers and secure drying lockers. Customers can even leave their washing to dry overnight in a secure locker.

Jarmo Kesanto, co-owner, said, “We’re thrilled with the success of 24 Laundromat’s sites around the UK. Providing our customers with a convenient, cost-effective way to do their laundry has always been our ultimate goal, and we are very proud to be able to offer a service which far exceeds what a washing machine can do at home.”

“The opening of our Darlington branch is a milestone for us and one we hope marks the beginning of expansion throughout the UK. A huge thank you to mayor Curry and the Morrisons team for all their support.” Anne-Marie Curry, mayor of Darlington, complimented the new branch: “24 Laundromat is an excellent concept, providing the Darlington community with a great facility and at a perfect time with the current cost of living increases.”
