Scottish laundry evacuated after ‘hazardous’ spillage leaves five in hospital

Five people were rushed to hospital in October after a “potentially hazardous” chemical spillage at Johnsons Hotel Linen in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, as reported on the Edinburgh Live website.

All five casualties were treated at the scene and taken to hospital for further medical examination. All five were subsequently discharged. Emergency services attended the scene along with a decontamination unit, an environmental protection unit and hazmat support as part of the operation which the business say was carried out quickly and successfully.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live at the time of the incident, a spokeswoman for Johnsons Hotel Linen Edinburgh said: “On Sunday 15 October, a chemical spill occurred at our premises in Bonnyrigg as a result of a faulty pump. “We immediately implemented our safety management procedures, including a precautionary evacuation of the site and informing the local fire brigade. The spillage was quickly contained and did not reach the watercourse. “A specialist team is currently onsite cleaning up the spillage and we anticipate that the site will be operational shortly.”
