New luxury laundry invests for growth with complete Girbau package

Mallaig Luxury Laundry Service, Lochaber, Scotland

The bustling port of Mallaig is the terminus of West Highland Line, famous for its Harry Potter trains, and at the end of the A830 “Road to the Isles”. To continue your journey from here you must go by ferry to the Isle of Skye, the Small Isles or the Western Isles. A popular area for tourists, Mallaig is over an hour’s drive from the region’s principal town of Fort William.

Mallaig Luxury Laundry Services was founded by owner and local resident Karen Johnston to provide a flexible, reliable, local and high-quality laundry service for the area’s tourism businesses including hotels, guesthouses, self-catering and pods. It also provides a laundry service for local residents, campsites and camper vans and for industries based around the port including working boats and yachts.

Johnston wanted to give something back to the local community when she founded the business, “Our customers are local and want a high-quality service that can turn their work round quickly.”

Mallaig Luxury Laundry Services is a new venture for Johnston, but she has worked in the laundry industry before. She knew what the market was looking for in and around Mallaig and had a good idea of the laundry equipment she was going to need. She approached a number of well-known suppliers and chose Girbau UK, who were able to provide extensive advice on all aspects of setting up a laundry business as well as optimum machine choice. The laundry has two Girbau HS-6017, 17kg capacity high spin washers and two energy-efficient ED340 dryers. “The Girbau machines are easy to programme and use, they wash and dry quickly with high quality results,” says Johnston. “We also found they were very cost competitive when we compared the market.”

Customer’s linens are washed and dried in single batches and never mixed in with one another. “We serve a large number of Airbnb and smaller operators, and they appreciate the personal service,” Johnston continues.

Many of the businesses she spoke to during her research said they wished they had bought bigger machines when they started, rather than having to trade up as they expanded. Advice which she particularly took on board when it came to choice of ironer, selecting Girbau’s PB5132 roller ironer with 3.2 metre ironing width.

“As duvet covers up to king size are a relatively high proportion of our work, it made sense to invest in an ironer big enough to handle them in a single pass and without need to put them through with a fold,” Johnston comments. “It has proven an excellent choice that gives us the consistent and high-quality finish we want to give our customers; we also have the capacity to scale up as the laundry grows.” After a successful launch year, the laundry is looking to expand capacity for next year by adding an additional washer.
