Laundry service ditches single-use plastic bags with reusable covers initiative
On-demand laundry and drycleaning service, ihateironing, is putting an end to single-use plastic waste with the launch of its new #IHatePlastic campaign.
The initiative introduces premium reusable covers to replace single-use plastic bags for delivering freshly cleaned garments.
Operating across the UK, in London, Brighton, Oxford, and Edinburgh, as well as internationally in New York City, ihateironing’s latest move highlights the brand’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In 2020, ihateironing first introduced their reusable cover renting strategy, through which the covers were rented and returned for a deposit fee of £3. Additionally, the drycleaning service ran a free trial where customers in Brighton received the covers for free, to test the waters for the viability of expanding this project across the whole business.
With over 150,000 reusable covers issued over the past four years and overwhelmingly positive customer adoption, ihateironing decided to take the leap and make reusable covers a permanent, company-wide standard.
“I’m grateful for the strong support we’ve received from our customers for our eco-friendly initiatives, including the rental strategy and our eco-slots. This encouragement has been a catalyst, motivating us to take even greater steps toward reducing our environmental impact,” says Matt Connelly, founder of ihateironing.
The new reusable covers are designed to be returned by customers with their next orders and used repeatedly for future deliveries of any items on hangers.
“As well as being kinder to the planet, the covers provide much better protection for clothes compared to single-use plastic bags which are easily damaged and ripped,” says Connelly.
The launch has also received strong support from ihateironing’s network of drycleaning centres, all of which are currently transitioning to the new covers and phasing out single-use plastic.
“We want to set a new benchmark to motivate drycleaning shops even beyond our network to take up reusable covers to replace their single-use plastic bags.”
By making reusable covers the new norm, they’re challenging conventional practices and proving that eco-conscious solutions can be implemented without compromising service quality or convenience. Through the #IHatePlastic campaign, ihateironing is paving the way for a much-needed shift in the garment care industry.
