CLEAN reap rewards of much safer driving

Safer driving

Those whose jobs involve driving – whether that’s deliveries, engineers heading for laundries or sales reps – know how working against the clock can add to the pressure. We don’t like to think about how sometimes the basic ‘rules of the road’ take a back seat for a few seconds.

But the responsible thing to do is demonstrated by CLEAN Linen & Workwear where reduced collisions, less speeding and improved fleet efficiency has been achieved through a data-driven driver coaching programme enabled by Samsara’s Connected Operations Platform.

By implementing Samsara’s vehicle telematics and AI dash cams, CLEAN has supported its 200 drivers to take ownership of their safety and performance. Every driver can now see their real-time performance metrics, receive tailored coaching and be recognised for their safer habits. There have been some remarkable results – collision rates down 38 per cent company-wide (some sites have achieved a reduction of over 50 per cent), an improvement in MPG and time spent driving above speed limits virtually wiped out.

CLEAN operate a 120-strong fleet of commercial vehicles and Peter Cox, their head of transport says: “We now have a centralised process which brings the consistency we need to the forefront of all insurance investigations. It’s not just the collision investigations that are reaping the rewards, but also the coaching benefit of evidence-based learning.” Every CLEAN driver can access real-time, accurate insights into their road performance.

The shift from manager-only visibility to shared access has enabled drivers to understand the impact of dangerous driving behaviours, such as harsh braking or speeding, and recognise exactly where improvements are needed. This data-driven approach to safety has enabled CLEAN to provide targeted coaching sessions focused on specific driver behaviours, as well as identify and reward positive driving habits to enable coaches to reinforce good performance.

The benefits realised through Samsara, including a cash bursary from CLEAN’s insurer, have allowed the company to reinvest in enhancing its driver safety and development programme. CLEAN is exploring additional Samsara capabilities to standardise training and communicate safety campaigns more effectively across the business. Samara’s Seth Stanfield says: “By incentivising better driving habits, CLEAN has cut down on emissions, reduced insurance premiums, and extended vehicle lifespans. The results highlight that, when technology and culture are aligned, fleets can ensure their drivers feel safe, supported, and confident while out on the road.”
