Mike and Jenny Hoare, and their son Alan all work at Bristol-based laundry company Johnson's Apparelmaster, and Mike is celebrating 50 years at the plant. Jenny has worked at the business for 27 years, while their son Alan has been employed for 24.

Mike was first employed by the laundry firm - then known as Clifton Cleaning - when he was 16 years old. He had worked for a short time at the local butchers, but hadn't enjoyed the role, so moved to the laundry where his aunt worked. He said: “I started by putting sheets through the dryers but I really wanted to be in the washroom so after 12 months I asked if there were any jobs going in there. I transferred and have been working there happily ever since." Mike met Jenny at the company and the couple were married in 1972.

Mike added: "Even though it’s a hard job, I love it. I like the companionship and even met my wife at work. “One of the biggest changes I’ve seen over the years is the move from using manual processes to automatic machines. "We used to have to wear rubber aprons and boots because we were pulling dripping wet washing through the spinner. Now we use powerful washer extractors." The family, who all still work at the plant, have racked up over 100 years of service between them. Two of Mike and Jenny's other sons have also been employed in the business.

Chris Belcher, general manager for Johnsons Apparelmaster Bristol, said: “Mike is amazing. Working for any company for 50 years is quite an achievement but, when the job is also physical, this is definitely a magic milestone. "However, for Mike it’s just another day at the office. "Rather than slowing down, he looks for difficult jobs. He’s been a supervisor for 35 years and his willingness to work hard alongside his team has earned him great respect from all his colleagues.”
